FAQs

Q: How do you play flag football?
A: The first rule of flag football is pretty straight forward: there’s no contact allowed. That includes tackling, diving, blocking, and screening. Instead, players wear flags that hang along their sides by a belt. To “tackle” the person in possession of the ball, the opposing team needs to pull one or both of their flags off. Visit the NFL FLAG website to find a complete rundown of the basic rules of flag football.

Additional FAQs

Q: How much playing time can my child expect?
A: All of our programs promote participation, fun, and fundamentals. Coaches are required to fairly allocate playing time equally among all players on the team. We will do our best to assure all players receive equal playing time.

Q: What do I get for my registration Fee?
A: A seven-week season including practices, use of well groomed fields, certified officials, NFL FLAG reversible team jersey, flag belt and flags, interactive website, organized administration, and a lot of FUN for you and your child!

Q: How many players are on a team?
A: Most teams have 8-10 players.  However, we do reserve the right to stretch these guidelines if the league deems necessary.

Q: Does the league supply uniforms?
A: Every Flag Football player in our program receives an NFL reversible team jersey and a flag belt to keep with your registration.

Q: How are Individual Players Placed on Teams?
A: This is a league designed to be competitive and grow skillsets of each player.  In order to give each player the opportunity to thrive, we will hold a combine to evaluate player skill levels.  A score will be given and then team rosters created using an average of the skill levels.  This will ensure each team is well rounded and can play competitively with each other.

Q: Are friend requests accepted?
A: Yes!  We want friends to play together and have FUN.  At time of registration, you will be able to submit a friend request.  We will make every effort to accommodate all friend requests.  There are some situations where team sizes may prevent a friend request from being approved.

Q: Who are the coaches?
A: Parent, family, or community volunteers! Greater Cypress Sports League NFL FLAG does not provide coaches. Once teams are assembled, parents will be recruited to coach and manage their team. Training is provided for all parents who wish to be a coach. No experience is necessary! If we are unable to secure a coach for your child's team before the season begins, every effort will be made to place your child on a new team. We need family members from all our players to be willing to help in some capacity: Head Coach, Assistant Coach, Team Manager, communications, snack, picture day, sideline organization, games, drills, plays, rotation and playing time. Assistance in any of these areas will greatly enhance the experience for your player as well as the other volunteers. There is a space for 4 volunteers on each team and each will receive a coaches shirt and a game ball.

Q: When are practices?  Once the teams are set practices will begin.  Parents/Coaches on the team control the day of the week you practice.  1-2 practices a week for 1- 11/2 hours; depends on what the parents and coaches decide.  The great thing about flag football is you just need a grass area to practice.  So any elementary or middle school area is fine for a practice.   Families all have different personal schedules so we let your team decide the practice day time and location.  Practices are not mandatory.

Q: Who are the Officials and are they qualified?
A: Most of our referee's are NFL Flag certified. Each official is trained, licensed, insured and certified through the state.  They are very good at what they do and will call a fair game for both sides.

Q: Do all flag football players need mouth pieces?
A: It is absolutely mandatory that all players are wearing a mouth piece before stepping on the field.

Q: Do you play in the rain?
A: Yes, we play in the rain. Flag football is an outdoor team sport and weather is a part of the game. It is always your discretion as a parent to not have your child play in the rain. If that is the case, please let your coach know so they can plan accordingly.

Q: How will I know if games are cancelled?
A: Games or camps through the Greater Cypress Sports League could change due to a school event, weather, or venue conflicts/issues. All parents and coaches will be notified if this occurs via email, website news and Facebook posts.
